A contribution to the Courtyard of the Gentiles

Tomorrow, February 12, will finally be opened in Bologna called the Courtyard of the Gentiles, which was announced several times by Msgr. Gianfranco Ravasi: the intent of the founding of the latter (which takes its name from the court that existed in the temple of Jerusalem where the people were "other" than elected) should be a space in which the Catholic Church is confronted with non- believers.
Judging by recent statements by influential members of the Catholic clergy and specifically of who was involved in the preparation of the event ( here a selection of 'pearls' ecclesial and clerical thread about atheists and atheism, and the sources of the quotations in this article), however, the initiative has the air to be a sort of debate make-up, plus a spectacular event that a true propaganda-peer comparison: in fact the Church, more and more worried by the advance of relativism and secularism of Western society, is committed tirelessly in 'recruitment campaign' with little risk as possible, and Bologna for the conference has been chosen with care stakeholders, fishing mostly in secure fence so-called "devout atheists" (not will first Massimo Cacciari, who is one of the most authoritative exponents, while we know nothing about the participation by Marcello Pera, who understands the pope for having collaborated several times with him) rather than in the secular world of associations and atheists and agnostics, to arrive at the summit to define the contempt UAAR (actually the largest and most influential membership atheist Italian) "folk" gimmick that is most likely to avoid a confrontation is not tamed.
A comparison of peer-l 'can-only assumes knowledge and mutual respect, and should be done only when citizens and non-believers and believers will have the same level of civil rights and individual liberties, a situation far removed to be carried out in some European democracies, including our country first.
But we give credit to Msgr. Ravasi and his staff, pending the outcome of the event and sincerely hope that what will come out first of all is the end of the denial of the existence of atheists (and atheism), the refund to them the full dignity of every human person deserves beyond their beliefs, and even the official declaration of the end of hostilities against Catholic atheists and interference in lawmaking by national parliaments. We believe at this point On this occasion we want to make our modest contribution to the debate in the form of a list of essential (to Nick Hornby), briefly and in short order, of what was essential was finally taken and placed at the base of the debate, from Bologna onwards: 1

atheism is not a danger to society and the Church, and is not threatening to the point of having the ability - and intentions - to destroy one or the other or "disfigured man and creation," as feared by Camillo Ruini in an interview with Corriere del 2 December 2009 by Pope Ratzinger and the hearing to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See January 12, 2010;

2 is not true that atheists are in favor of eugenics and of scientism outright regardless, maybe raised to think like religious, even an atheist has his own spirituality and love for the 'life', which ignore religion;

3 we can not say that atheists do not know God 'are not fully human' (Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor interviewed by the BBC in May 2009), or who are unable to grasp the 'humanity and love of neighbor, as he elegantly suggested Mr. Ratzinger in person at the General Audience of December 2, 2009 and in the homily of January 2, 2010;
4 can not be said that there atheism, or that it is impossible to be an atheist, or simply that atheism is the "rejection" of the existence of God, because this assumes that the existence of god is real and proven. E 'instead start from the well for which some claim that there is anything that has to try it, not those who deny it, which even then would have the burden of proof of non existence, a paradox unacceptable

5 is not true that atheists have no type of morality, or which are-according to the common misconception-beings without inhibitions and lack of respect for this neighbor, devoted to all kinds of criminal brutality, at best, that their life has no "direction, a purpose '(always Ruini, in the interview above), it is not true that atheists, by failing to a deity as a reference, rely on surrogates such as astrology or vices such as gambling, or create other types of idols, as if it must necessarily fill a void. Participants in the Courtyard of the Gentiles should take note of reality to understand it: there is no single ethical and moral one, the Christian is not the only possible and is not a priori be considered the best ever, and a man can achieve peacefully their aspirations even without a god on the horizon;

6 atheists do not share responsibility for the massacres committed by dictatorships "materialistic" of the twentieth century, with which atheism has no relevance: it is commonly cite Stalin, Hitler (Speech Ratzinger during his visit to Britain, September 2010) and Fidel Castro (though it leaves out - who knows why - Augusto Pinochet);
7 atheism is not a dogmatic ideology . There are actually many forms of atheism as there are atheists. Relativism feared by the Church is not negative in itself, but rather a resource that enriches and increases both individual companies in a variety of successful approaches to reality, while still ensuring the existence of religious ideologies;

8 do not need (heaven forbid) an 'alliance between monotheistic ' defeat ' atheism, as advocated by the Minister Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini in an article for L'Osservatore Romano, October 22, 2010, which sounds almost like an incitement to persecution of atheists, we also face a lot of attention to the use of biblical quotations, it is not prudent for example, that the Pope, at this time of witch hunts, stressing that there is need for the "stick and crook, to ward off wild animals from the herd" (celebration Eucharistic June 12, 2010);

And good job to all the defendants in the Courtyard.
